Can anyone give me cake decorating tips?
Hey everyone, i’m 16 and wanting to start a small, casual cake decorating business. I was just wondering if anyone had any helpful hints on cakes that would hopefully help. I’m planning on taking a class soon, but would be appreciative if I could get some tips from the outside world =) And maybe how much you’d pay for a well-baked cake for perhaps a birthday or someone special. Thanks guys!
Hey, I hate to be a downer….but….You cannot just start selling cakes from your home. It is very much against the law. There have to be inspections, permits, and certificates. You have to contact the agriculture department, the health department and the laws of your state. Most states have a long list of laws from you can’t have any pets in your home….to you have to have a commercial sink for mopping. A lot of the states, including where I live, do not allow it from your home ..at all..period. It doesn’t make any difference if you are selling 100 cakes or only 1.
Some states say you have to have a separate entrance way, refrigerator, hand sink…..and the list goes on.
The suggestion of Disney characters….very much in violation of copy right laws. You cannot make any copy righted design, attach it to a cake…then sell the cake.
To be on the safe side, I would check on the laws before doing anything.
You can still learn to decorate though it is a lot of fun.
Decorated cakes are priced by the quality of ingredients you use, the amount of time spent on each cake, how well known your name is, the uniqueness of your work and the area you live in.
If you want to get the feel of decorating I would suggest you check on youtube. They have clips on buttercream, fondant, roses, borders, stacking cakes, drawings, airbrush, sculpture, ………..
I have been decorating professionally for over 30 years and love it.

Go to http://www.wilton.com. That’s the site for the company that gives the classes and makes the tips. You can get a book on cake decorating from the library or buy one in a craft store that offers the classes. There are many sites on cake decorating that you’ll find by doing a simple Google search.
Go to the grocery store or bakery near you and see how much they charge for cakes in your area and then charge a few dollars less for yours.
You will need to buy cake boxes, and cardboard circles to put your cakes on. Wilton sells the circles, but I don’t think they sell the boxes.

Well be creative, think outside the box. . . Make a Disney characters for little children or anything for teenage that they like, even wedding cakes. Differents things can be cool! Good Luck!
