How do i go about starting my own cake decorating business?

I’ve self taught myself on how to do some cake decorating and hope to go back to school for some formal training, but i’m curious what materials i would need and any other information i would need to start a sucessful cake decorating business. Thanks!

if you go to a Michael’s or Hobby Lobby for Wilton cake deco training they will give you a full supply list of what supplies you can start with…also, if you complete all the classes (3 levels of 4 a piece), and you’re good, you can often get a part time job teaching the classes
then you can use that foundation of practice and teaching to build your business
please remember that there are two ways to be a cake decorator – use your own, refined, delicious and simple recipes for cakes or you can buy freshly baked and frozen cakes from your local grocery bakery (undecorated)

good luck! :)

every business starts with a business plan, google sample business plan and you should get something you can manipulate to fit your needs

By the time you’d get to paying all the gov,t. taxes in advance and buying all the bonding and insurance You’d be too broke to buy the icing on the cake.

you would prob deff want to go to school for business management before going to school for pastry.. business management will help you decide where when and how exactly to start a buisness.. besides its not really hard to do cake decorating you could just wing it.. but a pastry class isnt a bad idea you could take one for a semester and you’ll be on your way as long as you have that buisness degree (or knowledge)

It would probably be the most helpful to go and take to a pastry chef yourself. Call a restaurant that you really like, and ask if you could take the the chef for a while, tell him you are interested and see if he is down to tell you how everything works and hopefully he can give you a great insight in the business!
